“Great Magnetic Wolves” comes in a sleeve adorned by a black and white image of a horrifically tangled mass of branches; it’s beautiful and demented, just like music found within—a mauled beast of detuned acoustic clangs, picks and strikes. Garlic Yarg goes deep into the heart of the wood across the expanse of these seven pieces…real deep. The end result falls somewhere between a raw collision of classical solo guitar, disjointed backwoods folk, black metal, improv and Fushitsusha. Despite any apparent misgivings, it works surprising well, whether invoking images of blood soaked wolf fangs writhing in the dark with its taut atmospherics or exploring the prismatic depths of the dead human heart with a tension so palpable you could cut it with a bone saw. Not for everyone, but those with a tendency towards cabin fever will approve.
